Falcon Football Association

9-9-09 Meeting Minutes

Present: Coach Flossie, David Dempster, Elizabeth Shaffer, Tom Shaffer, Marcus Miller, Mary Baker, Karen Gaither, Veronica Polk, Becky Heimbaugh, Susan Allread, Dorryea Gladney, Bryan Shields, Sheri Shields.

Coach Flossie's Comments:

  • Thank you to moms for Varsity game meals and also to Freshman moms for providing pre-game snacks.

  • "Twinsburg was a disaster! Good jump to improve at Northwest, although we can't fumble the ball!"

  • Hooray to J.V. and freshmanon their wins.  Varsity team is very young only starting three seniors.  Team spirit is up!!

  • The football program will not tolerate any bad attitudes.  Currently, Heimbaugh, Costello, Eriel and Timonte have sustained injuries, but we are hopeful for their return.

  • Massillon is very good~tough season thus far to prepare us for the city series.

  • Explanation to group as follow-up to letter received from a freshman parent.  Very upset. No freshman are cut, not all are prepared to play for one reason or another.  If you have an issue, please address Coach Flossie directly.

  • All juniors should take the upcoming A.C.T. test.  Keep grades up.

  • Ellet donated a very durable rug in the locker room as a response to a Falcon player's injury due to wet floor.  A thank-you note should be sent.

Presidents Report: David Dempster

  • Thank you to Mary Baker for the outstanding job that she did on the football showcase.  We are told it is not finished yet.  Senior pics are coming.

  • Thank Karen Gaither for handling sportswear orders and Elizabeth Shaffer for concessions.

  • Thank Becky Heimbaugh for donating her professional time in preparing our proposed Bylaws and her and Carl Costello's organizing of our Meet-the-Team Night

  • Thank Veronica Polk and Etoile Gills as well as Regina Grice for recent game meals.

  • Karen Gaither moved to approve the proposed Bylaws, Veronica Polk gave a second.  There was no discussion and the motion to approve the proposed Bylaws  was approved.

Treasurer's Report-Tom Shaffer:

  • Approximately 500 Falcon Cards were sold.  Still need to collect the balance.  Any outstanding cards or money should be passed to Coach Flossie with player's name.

  • We will probably net $2500 for Falcon Cards.

  • The concession stand has netted ~$200

  • Regarding $50 player fees, only 10 players have paid thus far.  Checks should be made payable to, Falcon Football Association.  They can be passed in an envelope w/ player's name on it to Coach Flossie.  Otherwise, they can be mailed to Tom Shaffer, 152 Overwood Rd. Akron 44313.

  • We agreed to make and send out reminder fliers for player fees and then make phone calls to parents.  A reminder that no guest tickets will be sold to the Awards Banquet unless player fees are paid.  If there is a financial issue, you can choose to make 2-$25 payments in Sept. and October or please call and make some other arrangement with Tom, 330-701-0813.

  • We owe a $1,200 debt on a blocking machine that was purchased in 2008.

  • Following some discussion on a safe surplus amount, Elizabeth Shaffer proposed a motion that, "If we make above a $1,500 surplus, then we will pay up to $1,200 for the blocking machine". Susan Allread gave a second to the motion.  There was no further discussion and the motion passed as stated.

  • It was highly suggested that we, the members of the Falcon Football Association, draft a fund-raising letter as a promotional company has done in the past and solicit our own donations of which our organization would hold onto 100%. We will refer to this as our Falcon Football Letter Campaign.  Veronica Polk suggested scanning a team pic on the letter and have each player sign their name and nos.  This must be done during the current season.  Anyone who would like to help please contact, Elizabeth Shaffer via e-mail.

Secretary's Report-Elizabeth Shaffer:

  •  Caribou Coffee is donating the coffee for our J.V. home games. Stop in and enjoy a cup for $1 and more importantly, tell Caribou, "Thank You" whenever you stop in.

  • Seeking helpers w/ administration of Letter Campaign.

Sportswear-Karen Gaither:

  • It was discussed and we decided to order 35 t-shirts above our current orders to sell for $10 each at Interim Conference Night Sept 24th.

  • Seeking volunteers to smile and sell t-shirts during interim conferences.  We need two volunteers per shift.  The shifts are 3:30-5:00pm and 5:00-6:30pm.  We will have a table in the main atrium in front of the football showcase.  If there is a student that wants to look spirited and sell, let Elizabeth Shaffer know.

Other Items:

  • Tabled Awards Banquet discussion since Regina Grice was not present. Although, right now we are seeking a couple greeters the night of the event Sat. Nov. 14th

  • Senior Night is Fri. Oct. 16th at Infocision stadium. There is no school.  However,we plan to have a tailgate in the Infocision parking lot at approximately 5:00pm.  There is NO alcohol or glass bottles permitted at the stadium.  All of the details are not known yet, but expect a big canopy, wear lots of green and gold, bring something to share and come for dinner w/ a donation towards brats and burgers. Mary Baker will be making corsages for senior parents.  Senior photo's as well as game photo's will be professionally taken and available for purchase.

  • Falcon Spirit is needed for the Massillon game scheduled 9/18.  This includes face and body painting as well as your green & gold sportswear!

  • Freshman team update given by Marcus Miller: The team is (now) 2:1 and pregame snacks are going well. He was very concerned about a random fight between two Firestone girl-students at the Northwest game.  He broke it up but felt uneasy as to the presence of a security guard, etc,...The issue of security guards and the actual incident will be passed on to Mr. Petry our building principal.  If that ever happens again, he needs to be notified immediately.

  • Discussed the need for our players to have a positive presence in the community.  Mary Baker offered to look into our players passing out food at the October  distribution date at First Baptist Church on Shatto Ave.  Look for further info.

  • Meeting Adjourned 8:10pm

Respectfully Submitted,
Elizabeth Shaffer
